TRAINING/TUTORING

TEACHER
TRAINING

Beginning with the 2012/2013 school year, the JCF will offer teacher training in literacy to public and private schools in Colorado.

The program will include several days of group training coupled with individual mentoring throughout the school year.

STUDENT INSTRUCTION

We work with students beginning at age 4, throughout the lifespan. To this point our oldest student was in his 70's. Most commonly we see students 1-2 hours per week. We also do intensive sessions over school breaks and during the summers.

The sessions are interactive & effective. We work in a low stress environment. Students work with the same tutor consistently and will be assessed regularly. Typically, 10 - 15 hours of instruction are sufficient to complete the EBLI program.

ONLINE
INSTRUCTION

Here at the John Corcoran Foundation, we believe that no child or adult gets left behind when it comes to literacy, so, for those not living in Southern California, we provide instruction online.

A computer and internet connection are required.

Official Definition of Literacy, 2011

Literacy represents the lifelong, intellectual process of gaining meaning from print. Key to all literacy is reading development, which involves a progression of skills that begins with the ability to understand spoken words and decode written words, and culminates in the deep understanding of text. Reading development involves a range of complex language underpinnings including awareness of speech sounds (phonology), spelling patterns (orthography), word meaning (semantics), grammer (syntax) and patterns of word formation (morphology), all of which provide a neccessary platform for reading fluency and comprehension. Once these skills are acquired, the reader can attain full English literacy, which includes the abilities to approach printed material with critical analysis, inference and synthesis; to write with accuracy and coherence; and to use information and insights from text as the basis for informed decisions and creative thought.

Simple Definition of Literacy, 2011

Literacy, in all languages, is the ability to read for knowledge, write coherently, and think critically about printed material so one is able to engage in analysis, critique, synthesis, and to utilize information read to formulate ideas and make informed decisions.
