There will not be a successful revolution in education until we prioritize proper reading instruction.
The newly elected administration, among other things, has pledged to improve the quality of our education system. Linda McMahon will be the Secretary Of Education. It can be done. The first priority is to tell The Truth About Reading. Illiteracy is a common thread in all of our society ills. Education is the great equalizer. No matter how smart or clever a person may be, they need to know how to read and write to maximize their fullest potential in the world we live in today. When every person can harness the power of the written language, we will all be stronger: our students, our schools, and our nation. With properly trained teachers who understand the Science of Reading, America's illiteracy crisis is a problem we can solve.
I am not a scholar, a politician or a Hollywood superstar. But I am uniquely qualified to be a whistleblower on behalf of all children, teens and adults who have not learned how to read yet, to be an advocate for educators who want to be better prepared to teach all people to read, and to be an activist for a revolution of learning. My plea to all readers, writers, and lovers of learning and the written word is this: make literacy a priority and lend a hand to make sure everyone has a chance to learn how to read.
We have become a nation of sub-literates, functional illiterates, and dysfunctional illiterates. There has never been a better time for the incoming administration and Linda McMahon to consider creating an independent position, a "Literacy Czar", that would have a laser-like focus and responsibility to break America's cycle of failure and teach all of our children, teens and adults how to read.
In a nation that claims to value equal opportunity for all, we can no longer knowingly leave millions of children, teens and adults behind by not teaching them how to read and write. We must insist that literacy is an apolitical issue, one that everyone can embrace, regardless of political persuasion. We must put aside excuses and divisions and take up this righteous and noble cause together, with a laser-like focus.
The most important educational, civil rights, and human rights issue of our time is to make sure every person has access to effective, explicit, evidence-based literacy instruction.
Promises made, promises kept!
