Since the premiere of The Truth About Reading in September 2022, this new eye-opening documentary has been shared with audiences across the country in private community screenings. In March 2023, the University of Michigan-Flint hosted a showing of the film with UM Football Coach Jim Harbaugh and Genesee County Sheriff Christopher Swanson as featured panelists alongside the film’s director, Nick Nanton, one of the film’s stars, Nora Chahbazi, and Johnell Allen-Bey of Nation Outside.
The Truth About Reading looks at the illiteracy problem in America, highlighting people who learned to read as adults, and sharing proposed solutions for working towards a future where every child learns to read proficiently. The documentary highlights the powerful stories of David Chalk and John Corcoran, two men who didn’t learn how to read and write until they were adults.
The panelists gathered together after the film showing to discuss their personal connections to the documentary, the painful reality of the illiteracy crisis, and their reactions to watching the film.

The Truth About Reading is now available to purchase for personal viewing via Vimeo On Demand and is anticipated to be added to various streaming platforms in early 2024.
